Since I was a child, I was told stories of ancient cities buried beneath the ground, never to be found again. Stories repeated themselves, scrawled across the pages of history books, posters, movies, scripts. It all brought me to one conclusion. The world was waiting to be cracked open and explored, and I would be the one to do so. Of course, the movies you watch when you’re a kid, of people dressed up in exploration gear and cheesy hats, never truthfully detail what it’s like to see the world, and have it at your fingertips. People called me crazy for all of the places I had been by the time I hit my mid-twenties. I had traveled across continents, trudged through rainforests in the midst of spring storms, and even managed to wrangle a boar once or twice. None of it mattered in the scheme of things, though, because the artifact I was searching for, something so ancient that textbooks hardly had any information on its existence, had been out of sight for years. No matter what cave I searched or what mountain I climbed, nothing brought me closer to finding the Dahlia. I cycled through co-explorers, watching as people lost hope for the search and returned to their families, all while I pushed forward. I refused to give up on it. The Dahlia, the ancient piece of tech that could prove the existence of an entire ancient civilization, was worth every step, every cut, every single moment. Years went by like a dry winter on a farm, pulling every semblance of hope from my body. Every night, I scanned and re-scanned the tea-stained papers I had recovered from various archaeological digs, examining every minor detail in an attempt to understand something I assumed kept flying under my nose, escaping me like a fleeting moment in a waterfall of emotions. It was one night, when the moonlight trickled in through my window, resting upon the maps that sat on my desk, that I had given up. Hope had been plucked from my body, burying me in a state of despair, one that sent me sprawled onto my bed, staring up at the ceiling as I pondered what I could do with my future. I was prepped to stand and take a shower to wash away my sorrows when the papers shifted. My eyes darted to the maps, and my feet led me over, guiding me to see that the moonlight cast upon their pages had shifted something. With a bit of re-arrangement, the maps revealed themselves to be something else entirely within the moonlight. Together, they showed a circle in the center, a set of coordinates that I had yet to explore.I panicked. I threw the maps into my bag, tossed on my adventuring clothes, and rushed out the door, heart pounding against my chest. It wasn’t a quick trip by any means. The coordinates were somewhere in the midst of a dense northern forest, miles from my home. I flew, drove, and eventually set out on foot into the deep brush and flora of the woods. From there, I grew sidetracked. I had traveled amongst so many forests, yet this one held an air about it. While many rainforests were humid and loud with the sounds of animals, this one remained far quieter than I had ever observed before. The chittering of animals was distant and hushed, as if something lay beneath the surface they were cautious of. After having my fill of animal observations, I cut through the bushes and thick leaves to finally find the coordinates. I stood upon damp land, eyes trailing along the trees around me, and found no building nor temple amongst the trees, but something glimmered beneath the dirt below: metal, rusted over with the miracles of nature. I dug the hatch free of its containment and twisted it open, revealing a shadowed cavern below. After adjusting the headlight I had placed on moments prior, I slipped onto the ladder and slid my way down to the bottom. Underneath the hatch, my headlight illuminated tunnels. Ancient and lined with stone brick, they seemed to stretch on infinitely. No sound made its way through their thick walls, but it was less than unsettling. It felt peaceful and protected. I pushed into the tunnels, dropping rope to ensure I didn’t get myself lost in the infinite labyrinth. Without a proper signal or machinery to check the time, I got swept up in the moment. Hours passed like minutes, day shifted into night above my vision, until I finally emerged into an open, cavernous room.It was circular, with a small moat around a central pedestal and a bridge lined with stone brick pillars. I stepped over it, ensuring my footing was steady, and approached the pedestal. A hole in the ceiling shone moonlight down upon the artifact: an odd, microchip-looking piece that glimmered with ancient technology. A gentle purple glow emanated from its exterior as I observed it. I could have used it to change the world, to save lives. That was its intention, as I believed, to save humanity in its darkest times. Now, it had shown itself to me. Believing I could use it for good, I extended my fingers to brush along the metal lining its side. I felt a gentle shock, one that riveted its way through my entire body. Then, silence. The artifact attached to me, hooking into my core and transforming me into something entirely new. My body shifted and shuddered under the pressure of the transformation, as metal curled around my limbs and circuits burned with energy. Panda ears flicked atop my head, and I realized the artifact had chosen me to carry its purpose. I discovered that the artifact was never meant to save humanity. I was. The body it had forged for me was a vessel, a spark of life designed to carry hope, to spread joy, to protect and inspire. With this newfound purpose burning in my core, I stepped into the world again, fully alive, with metal limbs gleaming with ancient energy. I was no longer just an explorer. I was Saberita, a cybernetic panda unlike anything the world had ever seen.I embraced the chaos, the fun, and the adventure that awaited me, knowing that every step I took could change the lives of those around me. I was ready, eternally grateful, and unstoppable.
